Heat Treating

Over the last five decades, United Gear & Assembly evolved from a small, family-owned operation, to a global manufacturer and international supplier of precision gears, shafts, and similar assemblies. With a rich Midwestern history, many industries such as construction, mining, and agriculture turn to United Gear & Assembly for the design, prototype, and production of complex machinery components.

From prototype to production, our manufacturing processes are backed by industry standards and certifications such as ISO, CQI-9, and IATF to guarantee quality processes and products for our customers in any industry.

United Gear & Assembly’s Heat-Treating Capabilities

Understanding that a proper heat treatment is a vital part of the production process, our facility includes a metallurgical analysis lab with heat treating capabilities, such as:

  • Gas Carburizing
  • Through-Hardening
  • Press Quenching
  • Gas Nitriding
  • Induction Heat Treating
  • Stress Relieving
  • Normalizing
  • Straightening
  • Magnetic Particle Inspection

Additionally, our facility houses a broad range of cutting-edge technology and equipment to support our expansive range of heat treating services, including:

  • (5) Surface Combustion Super 30 All-Case Carburizing Furnaces
  • (9) Tempering Ovens
  • (1) Surface Combustion 2-Row Carburizing Pusher Furnace with In-line Tempering Oven
  • (3) Gleason Press Quench Machines
  • (1) High-Frequency Induction Machine
  • (2) Low-Frequency Induction Machines
  • (2) Nitrex Gas Nitriding Furnaces

We can typically carburize up to 250 pounds, with a 30-inch diameter, and maximum length of 45 inches, while our induction machines can handle lengths up to 40 inches. In the lab, our staff metallurgists work with a variety of equipment such as mass spectrometer, cut-up saws, manual and automatic polishers, micro-hardness, and hardness testers, as well as, a metallurgical microscope, ensuring that all selected materials are of the highest possible quality and are suitable for the desired application.

In-House Control and Quality

Possessing our own heat-treating facilities in-house allows United Gear & Assembly a significant advantage over our competition. With little to no outsourcing, our primary and secondary manufacturing processes are controlled from start to finish, enabling us to guarantee a quality product. Since we don’t need to outsource additional services such as heat treatments, our highly skilled team of engineers and technicians can provide some of the fastest lead times in the industry for all your gear, shaft, and powertrain manufacturing needs.
